Evesham road planer operator to compete in stock car racing challenge in Ireland

A road planer operator at Evesham’s Jet Plant Hire is taking on an epic challenge in Ireland which will see him compete in a major stock car racing competition.

Josh Spiers has worked at the UK’s leading road planing company since he was 21 years old, travelling across the country to work on a range of projects. In his spare time, Josh is also passionate about stock car racing, entering competitions nationwide using a car that he built with his brother.

Josh’s stock car proudly displays the Jet logo on the side, with the company supporting his passion for the sport which he’s taken part in since he was a child. It’s a family affair for Josh, with his brother and uncle also regularly racing.

May will see Josh take part in the Irish Open Championship at Nutt’s Corner in Northern Ireland. The event is a key date in the stock car racing calendar, attracting talent from across the world.

Josh gave some background about why he loves stock car racing so much: “Honestly, it’s something that I’ve always known. It’s a great chance to have some proper fun and get your hands dirty. I’m not competing in these competitions to become a world champion, it’s more of a hobby to me and something that I just love doing.”

Josh is also passionate about encouraging young people to get involved in the road planing industry. Jet Plant Hire offers a dedicated training programme, Jet School, which equips trainees with the skills they need to kickstart their career.

Road planing is essential for keeping Britain’s roads moving, with damaged road surfaces removed using a planing machine, allowing new surfaces to be applied. Successful applicants will be carrying out this vital work.

Josh says it’s a brilliant career to consider: “I can’t imagine ever doing anything else. This job gives you the chance to travel to new places and every single day is a fresh challenge. I also really like how Jet trust me to get the job done in the right way. We do, however, need new talent to come through for the next generation so I’d really encourage more young people to look into it.”

The Jet School curriculum includes operating a planer, setting machine levels, depth checking, kerb cutting, general machine competency and basic maintenance. Those interested in joining are encouraged to reach out to Jet here.
